According to the rail test conducted by the Austrian Transport Association , the station was not popular with passengers before the renovation. In addition to poor cleanliness and poor appearance, the inadequate accessibility was also denounced.

Station renovation 2016–2019
The renovation of the station began in May 2016. By the beginning of 2017, an electronic interlocking was built that is remote-controlled from Villach . Construction work began in the customer area at the beginning of 2017. The platform was shortened to 160 m and the construction of a provisional platform began, from which trains have been departing since November 19, 2017, 5:20 a.m. By then, a barrier-free and weatherproof waiting area was set up, in which information screens with the departure times of the trains and information on the station renovation were installed. The last train from the old platform was the 4744 042 , which departed on November 19, 2017 at 0:30 as S1 / S9 from platform 2 to Mürzzuschlag. On June 20, 2019, the new platforms 2 and 3 went into operation. Platform 1 followed on June 25th. On October 18, the ÖBB organized an opening party to conclude all work.
The aim of the renovation was the barrier-free expansion and the construction of an additional platform as well as the enlargement of the park and ride facility . For this purpose, the station building was demolished and the hill removed to create a level access to the station. In the future, S1 trains between Graz Hauptbahnhof and Frohnleiten are to be shortened, as the southern half of the line is more busy. This option has been used since December 2019 with the train pair 4004/4007, which represents a new early connection between Graz Hbf and Frohnleiten. Platform 1–2 was built with a length of 210 meters to enable the stop of a morning Railjet from Graz to Villach since December 2019 and, from probably 2026, the stop of the Interregio xpress trains (IRX) from Graz to Linz, Klagenfurt (via the Aichfeld ) and Bischofshofen.
