William Thornton Blue

William Thornton Blue (born January 31, 1902 in Cape Girardeau , Missouri , † 1968 ) was an American jazz musician ( clarinet , alto saxophone )

William Thornton Blue, who was occasionally called Bill Blue , began his music career in local bands in St. Louis, Missouri , where his father William Blue was a band leader in the music industry. He then played with Wilson Robinsons Bostonians , a Territory band , and finally with Charlie Creath and Dewey Jackson in the mid-1920s . By the end of the decade he worked with Andrew Preer's Cotton Club Orchestra in New York City and then toured Europe as a member of Noble Sissle's band . He then stayed a short time in Paris , where he worked with John Ricks. On his return to New York he became a member of the Missourians , led by Cab Calloway ; then he worked for Luis Russell . For health reasons he was rarely active as a musician at the end of the 1930s; later he spent most of his life in the sanatorium.
