Glenn Anders
Charles Glenn Anders (born September 1, 1889 in Los Angeles , California , † October 26, 1981 in Englewood , New Jersey ) was an American theater and film actor .
Life
Anders was born in Los Angeles in 1889 as the son of the Swedish immigrant and entrepreneur Charles Gustave Anders . His mother, Etta Arvilla Slade, who was born in Vermont , was of Scottish - Irish descent. His parents were devout Methodists , which is why they were initially against Anders wanting to be an actor. After graduating from Los Angeles High School in 1908, his mother and finally his father agreed that Anders could attend the local Wallace Dramatic School. He made his professional stage debut with an extra role in Shakespeare's Macbeth . He then appeared as a performer in vaudeville theaters. In 1919 he went to New York to study at Columbia University . That same year he made his Broadway debut in the play Just Around the Corner . From then on he appeared regularly on the theater stage, including in the plays Strange Interlude by Eugene O'Neill and A Farewell to Arms based on Ernest Hemingway 's novel of the same name. Over the years he has appeared with notable actresses including Judith Anderson , Lynn Fontanne , Ruth Gordon , Helen Hayes and Gertrude Lawrence .
In 1925, Anders appeared in DW Griffith's Sally of the Sawdust next to WC Fields for the first time in front of the film camera. However, only a few screen appearances followed. His best-known film role was that of attorney George Grisby in Orson Welles ' film noir classic The Lady of Shanghai (1947), in which Rita Hayworth played the title role and was his undoing as femme fatale . In 1951 he retired from the film business. He continued to play theater on Broadway until 1958. He then retired and spent several years in Guadalajara , Mexico . He returned to the United States in the late 1970s to spend his final years in Englewood , New Jersey . He died in 1981 at the age of 92 and was buried in Kensico Cemetery in Westchester County .
