Career highlights and awards

John Oliver "Jack" Ernst (* 4. December 1889 in Llewellyn , Pennsylvania ; † 9. March 1968 in Williamsport , Pennsylvania) was an American American Football- and baseball players. He played halfback and quarterback in the National Football League (NFL) for the Pottsville Maroons , New York Yankees , Boston Bulldogs and Frankford Yellow Jackets .

Player career

Jack Ernst studied at Lafayette College , where he played football , baseball and basketball . He was the starting quarterback on the college football team for three years . Ernst won 20 of 27 games with the "Lafayette Leopards" . After completing his studies, he joined the Pottsville Maroons, where he became a player with Herb and Russ Stein . The Maroons team won ten out of twelve games in its rookie season and declared themselves NFL champions after the game round. The NFL, however, declared the Chicago Cardinals the title holder. The Maroons had won their game against the Cardinals, but the Chicago team had the highest win percentage and the Maroons had broken the rules at the end of the season. Ernst played in Pottsville for three more years . In 1928, the later members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Walt Kiesling and John McNally joined the team. Pete Henry took over the coaching position. But even these top players could not prevent the team from winning only two out of ten games. After the Maroons season, Ernst played a game for the New York Yankees. In 1929 he returned to the Maroons, who had since moved to Boston and were renamed Boston Bulldogs. After another season with the Frankford Yellow Jackets, he ended his career.

During his professional football career, Jack Ernst played baseball in the minor leagues when he was not playing . From 1925 to 1927 he was active with the Wilkes-Barre Barons , from 1928 he played for the Williamsport Grays and from 1931 for other lower-class baseball teams. Ernst ended his baseball career after the 1937 season.
