Georges Seurat : Eiffel Tower, oil on canvas, 1889
- March 31 : In Paris, France, the Eiffel Tower built on the occasion of the centenary of the French Revolution will be completed in time for the World's Fair and will be opened to the public a little later. The Parisian population feels that the tallest structure in the world, designed by Gustave Eiffel and Charles Léon Stephen Sauvestre at the time, is an eyesore and collects signatures for its removal.
- August 10 : The Natural History Museum is opened in Vienna as one of the Ringstrasse structures . It was built in the style of historicism over an 18-year construction period based on the designs by Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer .
painting
- January: Vincent van Gogh paints three more paintings in the Sunflowers series in Arles , which he began the previous year .
- Vincent van Gogh paints other versions of his bedroom in the “Yellow House” in Arles .
- May 8 : Van Gogh moves from Arles to the nearby Saint-Paul-de-Mausole mental hospital in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence , where he practices painting as therapy.
- June: Vincent van Gogh paints the picture Starry Night in oil on canvas in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in southern France . Then he also makes a drawing with the same name.
- Sommer: Van Gogh has a seizure in which he tries to swallow poisonous paint. Several self-portraits are then created. He also turned a number of paintings that he owned as black and white reproductions - mainly by Delacroix and Millet - into colored paintings.
- September: Vincent's brother Theo van Gogh succeeds for the first time in accommodating his brother's works in a well-known exhibition of avant-garde art. The reactions are largely appreciative.
