- July 15 : The König Albert Bridge between Blasewitz and Loschwitz is inaugurated. It is the fifth fixed Elbe crossing in what is now the city of Dresden .

- Edvard Munch paints the first version of his painting The Scream .
Museums and exhibitions
- The city council of Venice decides to hold a biennial art exhibition , the first Biennale di Venezia will open under the name I Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte della Città di Venezia on April 30th in the presence of the Italian royal couple Umberto I and Margherita di Savoia . It becomes a popular success.
- May 1 : Almost a year late , US President Grover Cleveland opens the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus . Around 27.3 million people will visit the world exhibition until it closes on October 30th . 70,000 exhibitors from 46 nations present their exhibits on an area of 278 hectares. Chicago architect Daniel Burnham and landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted were responsible for the design of the entire complex . The buildings were built by various architects in the style of the Italian Renaissance. The exhibition has a strong influence on the architecture and art of the time.
- May 14th : The Prussian Minister of Culture Robert Bosse opens the first major Berlin art exhibition .
