Dirk Coster

Dirk Coster (born October 5, 1889 in Amsterdam , † February 12, 1950 in Groningen ) was a Dutch physicist.

From 1913 to 1919 he studied physics at the University of Leiden and received his doctorate there in 1922. He then worked with Karl Manne Siegbahn at Lund University and with Niels Bohr in Copenhagen. From 1924 to 1949 he taught experimental physics at the University of Groningen .

Together with George de Hevesy he discovered in 1923 the element hafnium by X-ray spectroscopy in a Zirconiummineral .

Dirk Coster helped Lise Meitner to leave Nazi Germany on July 13, 1938.

The asteroid (10445) Coster was named after him.
