Mercédès Jellinek
Mercédès Adrienne Ramona Manuela von Weigl , née Jellinek , divorced locksmith (born September 16, 1889 in Vienna ; † February 23, 1929 there ), is the godmother of the automobile brands Mercedes and Mercedes-Benz .
Life
Mercédès Jellinek's parents were the Austro-Hungarian diplomat and car dealer Emil Jellinek and his wife Rachel Goggmann Cenrobert. Mercédès had two older brothers, Adolph and Raoul Fernand . The mother died in 1893. The father's second marriage in 1899 resulted in three sons and a daughter.
Mercédès Jellinek married the Viennese Karl Freiherr von Schlosser in Nice in 1909, with whom she had a daughter Elfriede in 1912 and a son Hans-Peter in 1916. In 1926 she separated from her husband and married the Viennese sculptor Rudolf von Weigl , who died of consumption a few months later . Mercédès von Weigl himself died of bone cancer in 1929 . She found her final resting place in the family grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 59C, No. 26), where several of her siblings and her uncle Max Hermann Jellinek are also buried. Although one of the most famous car brands bears her first name, she has never owned a car herself.
Her brother Raoul Fernand committed suicide in 1939 under pressure from anti-Semitic persecution. Her daughter Elfriede was persecuted by the National Socialists. Her son Hans-Peter was arrested by the Gestapo during the German occupation of France and rescued by the US Army in 1944 .
Afterlife
Namesake
Mercédès Jellinek's father developed an interest in automobiles at an early age. After the death of his wife in 1893, he set up an office in Nice. In 1897 he received his first car from Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG). During the Nice - Magagnone - Nice tour on March 21, 1899, a 16 hp Daimler racing car won the first prize, which Emil Jellinek had registered under the pseudonym Mercédès . In April 1900 Jellinek ordered 36 Daimler cars - a third of the annual production - and requested the construction of a new car, which he called Mercedes , the first of which was delivered to Nice on December 22nd. In March 1901, the new car scored a series of victories at the Nice race week.
On June 23, 1902, Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft registered the name Mercedes as a trademark . The trademark was legally protected on September 26th. In 1909 the Mercedes star was registered as a trademark. The automobiles of Daimler-Benz AG, created in 1926, became known under the brand name Mercedes-Benz .
Emil Jellinek also wanted to decorate himself with the name of his daughter and requested that his surname be changed to Jellinek-Mercédès . In June 1903 his application was granted. Emil Jellinek-Mercédès commented on this decision that “this is probably the first time a father has borne his daughter's name”.
Model for statues
The Carinthian sculptor Josef Valentin Kassin designed the figures of the Undine Fountain in Baden near Vienna , which was inaugurated in 1903, based on living models. He gave the main character Undine the facial features of Mercédès Jellinek. Kassin also made the statue of a plaintiff from the Jellinek family grave in Vienna's central cemetery based on the model of Mercédès Jellinek.
