Josef Valentin Kassin (born May 15, 1856 in Klagenfurt , † December 30, 1931 in Vienna ) was an Austrian sculptor .

Life

Kassin came from a family from the then independent community of St. Ruprecht , which is now a district of Klagenfurt. The house where he was born is number 69 on Sankt Ruprecht Strasse and is a well-preserved two-story building (see picture). In 1871, when Kassin was fifteen years old, his father, a respected man, mayor and a beer brewer and farmer, died. At that time Josef Kassin was attending secondary school in Klagenfurt.

When the sculptor Franz Pönninger came to Klagenfurt for a new monument for Empress Maria Theresa , he was introduced to the artistically gifted Kassin. In 1873 Pönninger brought him to Vienna, where two years later he was allowed to attend the Academy of Fine Arts . 1885 Kassin received for the bronze group Samson and Delilah the Rome Prize , after a five-year study in Italy followed. After that, Vienna became his permanent residence. The sculptor was considered a lovable and humble person with a lot of humor, he also played the cello .

People in Carinthia were proud of him. Kassin kept receiving smaller orders from his homeland.

Kassin worked in a very strange studio , including a hoard of various collectibles, in Bäckerstraße ( ON  20), Vienna's inner city . Lehmann's General Housing Gazette noted the residential address in the year of his death, Dominikanerbastei  6, Vienna-Innere Stadt.

Weakened by a severe cold , the artist died at the age of 75. He found his final resting place in the St. Ruprecht cemetery in Klagenfurt; the simple tombstone is adorned with a marble medallion with a girl's face, signed “J. Kassin 1929 ".
