Carl Anwandter , in Chile Carlos Anwandter , (born April 1, 1801 in Luckenwalde , Prussia , † July 10, 1889 in Valdivia , Chile ) was a German pharmacist and politician who emigrated to Chile in 1850.

Life

Germany

Carl Anwandter attended the Joachimsthal Gymnasium in Berlin from 1815 to 1817 and completed an apprenticeship as a pharmacist from 1817 to 1821. After serving with the guard pioneers in Potsdam, he studied pharmacy in Berlin . After his marriage to Emilie Fähndrich in 1825, he and his family went to Guben in Lower Lusatia .

In 1829 he came to Calau , where, in addition to numerous honorary posts, he was city treasurer from 1836 to 1849 and mayor of the city from July to September 1849. His political ideas and activities led to his election in 1847 as a member of the United State Parliament (as a representative of the Mark Brandenburg) and in 1848 as a member of the Prussian National Assembly .

He took part in the 1848 revolution in Germany . This and his liberal and republican principles, which stood in opposition to Prussian absolutism , led him to think about emigration.

In 1850 Anwandter emigrated to Chile with the Hamburg sailing ship Hermann , where he landed on November 13, 1850 with a group of 95 German immigrants in the port of Corral near Valdivia .

He gained importance as a representative of the first contingent of German settlers sent by the colonization commissioner Bernhard Eunom Philippi . In 1851 he founded the Anwandter brewery (Cervecería Anwandter) on Isla Teja of Valdivia, the first brewery in the country. It was destroyed in the Valdivia earthquake in 1960 .

In addition, Anwandter founded the fire service company Germania in Valdivia in 1852 , the German association Club Alemán in 1853 and the German School in 1858 , of which he was director until 1876 and which today bears his name (Instituto Alemán Carlos Anwandter) .

Famous quote

As a representative of the first closed German immigrant group to Chile, he made the following pledge to the Chilean immigration agent:

“We will be as honest and hardworking Chileans as only the best of them can be. Having entered the ranks of our new compatriots, we will know how to defend our adoptive fatherland against any foreign attack with the determination and energy of a man who defends his fatherland, his family and his interests. "

The loyalty of German immigrants to their new homeland, which is expressed in this way, while at the same time sticking to their own traditions, has remained formative for many German-Chileans to the present day.

memory

A street in Calau was named after him in 1935. To mark the centenary of the German School in Valdivia, a Chilean postage stamp with the inscription "Instituto Alemán C. Anwandter, Valdivia 1859-1959" was issued, bearing his portrait.
