The Isla Teja ( island Teja ) [ tɛxa ] is a river island in the west of the Chilean city of Valdivia . It is located northwest of the old town of Valdivia and is separated from it by the Río Valdivia . The Río Cruces flows from the north west of the island over and opens at its southern tip in the Valdivia River, the few kilometers to the west in the Pacific Ocean flows. To the north of the island, the narrow Río Cau-Cau connects the two rivers like a canal.

In the middle of the 19th century the island was settled by German immigrants and finally part of the city, with which it was only connected by a bridge since 1939. Due to this long-lasting geographical separation, the island is still a center of the German community today, and the German school abroad is also located here.

Large parts of the island sank into the river due to geological subsidence during the severe earthquake of 1960 .

The Universidad Austral de Chile has its largest campus in the northern part of the island. The university's botanical garden is also located there . Since the construction of a bridge over the Río Cruces in 1987, the most important land connection to Niebla on the Pacific coast has been across the island. A second bridge between the island and the rest of the city - to relieve the Puente Pedro de Valdivia , built in 1954 - has been planned for several years.

The largest folk festival in the region, the " Kunstmann Valdivia Beer Festival " takes place annually in Parque Saval on the island.
