The Universidad Austral de Chile ( Southern University of Chile ) is a public Chilean university based in Valdivia . Founded on September 7, 1954 , it is one of the country's seven traditional universities established before 1980.

Its facilities are spread across the Isla Teja and Miraflores campuses in Valdivia and a branch in Puerto Montt .

In a nationwide university ranking published by the El Mercurio newspaper in December 2006, the quality of teaching was first, second in research and third in overall results.

Faculties

There are nine faculties :

Except for the Faculty of Engineering, which is located on the Miraflores campus, all faculties are located on the Isla Teja campus.

The Institute for Geosciences ( Instituto de Geociencias ) is not subordinate to any faculty and is also located on the Isla Teja campus.
