Nelson G. Kraschel

Nelson George Kraschel (born October 27, 1889 in Macon County , Illinois , † March 15, 1957 in Harlan , Iowa ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and from 1937 to 1939 the 27th governor of the state of Iowa.

Early years and political advancement

Kraschel, who was born on a farm near Macon , attended public schools in his homeland. In 1910 he moved to Harlan, Iowa, where he worked as a farmer and livestock auctioneer. In this profession he became very successful. In 1932 the Democrat Kraschel ran for the office of Lieutenant Governor of Iowa and was elected. So he was until 1937 Deputy Governor Clyde L. Herring .

In 1936 he was elected governor himself and was introduced to his new office on January 14, 1937. His two-year term in office was without any particular highlights. Noteworthy are the establishment of a social welfare board and the successful mediation of a strike. In 1938 Kraschel sought a second term, but was defeated in the elections to George A. Wilson .

Another résumé

In 1942 Kraschel applied again to no avail for the office of governor. Kraschel was a supporter of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal policy. Between 1943 and 1949 he was employed in the administration of the establishment for granting loans to farmers ( Farm Credit Administration ). Then he retired to his farm. Nelson Kraschel was married to Agnes Johnson, with whom he had three children.
