Anaconda is a town of 9,298 inhabitants (as of 2010) in Deer Lodge County , Montana , United States . It is located in the Rocky Mountains and is surrounded by mountains up to 3,164 meters high. Anaconda covers an area of 8 km² and is 1,626 meters above sea level and is the seat of the county administration ( County Seat ).
The city's name comes from the Anaconda Copper Mining Company , which had its headquarters there. Anaconda is therefore one of the so-called company towns .
history
In 1883 the copper smelter of the Anakonda copper mine , located 40 kilometers southeast of Butte , was built on the site of the later Anaconda , whereupon a settlement developed around this hut and was given the name of the mine .
In 1891, Anaconda was defeated by the city of Helena in its efforts to become the new capital of the state. The last ironworks in the city was closed in 1980. Since then, the place has primarily oriented itself towards tourist development.

The Anaconda Smelter Stack near town is one of the tallest masonry chimneys in the world at 178.3 meters.
