William A. Cobban

William Aubrey "Bill" Cobban (born December 31, 1916 in Anaconda , Montana , † April 21, 2015 in Lakewood , Colorado ) was an American paleontologist and geologist .

Cobban studied at the University of Montana in Missoula ( bachelor's degree in 1940) and worked from 1940 for an oil company ( Carter Oil Company in Tulsa , later part of Exxon ). In 1946 he continued his studies at Johns Hopkins University with his doctorate in 1949. From 1948 he worked for the United States Geological Survey , where he worked with John B. Reeside on the biostratigraphy of the Western Interior , including field work in the bentonite - Layers of the Upper Cretaceous began in Montana and South Dakota . In 1992 he retired from USGS.

He dealt in particular with marine paleontology (especially ammonites and other invertebrates) and stratigraphy of the late Cretaceous in North America ( Western Interior Seaway ). In 1985 he received the Paleontological Society Medal and in 1990 the Raymond C. Moore Medal for Paleontology . In 1974 he received the Meritorious Service Award and in 1986 the Distinguished Service Award from the US Department of the Interior .

He was a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science , a Fellow of the Paleontological Society , the Geological Society of America , the Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM), and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists .
