Yohani Kinyala Lauwo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yohani Kinyala Lauwo (* allegedly 1872, presumably in Marangu ; † May 10, 1996 ibid), later called Mzee Lauwo , was a Tanzanian mountain guide and allegedly belonged to the group of the first to climb Kilimanjaro as the only African .

When Hans Meyer asked the Mangi (chief) of the Jagga in Marangu for support for his planned ascent of Kilimanjaro in 1889, Yohani Kinyala Lauwo is said to have been appointed his guide. If he actually accompanied Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller , he would have been the first African on the summit of Kibo on October 6, 1889 . Meyer's expedition report, however, contains no reference to Lauwo.

After Meyer's and Purtscheller's expedition, Lauwo is said to have led mountain tours for almost seventy years. On the occasion of his - by his own account - 100th birthday, the TANAPA (Tanzanian National Park Administration ) gave him a house in Marangu. He died allegedly at the age of 124 and would have been one of the oldest people ever.
