Joseph John Erxleben (born September 15, 1889 in Franklin County , Missouri , † August 29, 1973 in Houston , Texas ) was an American long-distance runner .

Joseph Erxleben first appeared in February 1909 in a 15-mile race in the St. Louis Coliseum , which was organized by Saint Louis University . Erxleben won the race and he also won the Missouri Athletic Club's Marathon in the same year. The following year he finished second, and in 1911 he was able to win the marathon again.

In 1912 Erxleben won the Missouri Athletic Club's Marathon a third time and was thus able to qualify for the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm . According to an article in the Washington Times , Erxleben was supposed to start in the 10,000-meter run . However, Erxleben was used in the marathon . Here he finished eighth with a time of 2: 45: 47.2 hours. After the Stockholm Games, Erxleben returned to the USA on board the passenger steamer Vaderland .
