Christian Albrecht von Benzon (born July 11, 1816 in Copenhagen , † September 3, 1849 in Paris ) was a Danish history painter.

Life

The son of the chamberlain and cavalier Jacob von Benzon (1759–1842) and his second wife, the opera singer Sophie Catherine, née Holm (1796–1862), studied portrait and history painting at the Copenhagen Art Academy from 1833 to 1836 , including with the German-born History painter Johann Ludwig Lund . During this time his portrait of the poet Hans Christian Andersen was created . He then continued his education in Düsseldorf , where he was enrolled in the painting classes of Theodor Hildebrandt and Friedrich Wilhelm von Schadow at the art academy from 1839 to 1843 . In his private life, he joined the Norwegian painter Adolph Tidemand , who painted his portrait in 1839 and was also Hildebrandt's student at the art academy until 1841. Both already knew each other from studying together in Copenhagen. In Düsseldorf von Benzon married the painter Marie Therese Cazin. In 1845 he moved to Paris, where he got into debt despite some respectable successes. In 1848 he traveled to Denmark for the last time. He died of cholera in a Paris guilty prison, only 33 years old.

Von Benzon is considered the only "true" representative of the Düsseldorf School of Painting in Danish art. In 1842 he sent his painting The Last Confession , and in 1844 his painting The Assassination of St. Knud in St. Alban's Church in Odense 1086 , which is considered to be his most important work, from Düsseldorf to Denmark. In 1846 he submitted the painting Norman Guide Hastings conquers an Italian city by a ruse from Paris for the spring exhibition in Charlottenborg Palace . For another picture taken in Paris, Louis IV of France recognizes Richard I and his descendants as dukes of Normandy in Rouen in the presence of Harald Blåtand of Denmark , Louis-Philippe I awarded him a gold medal.
