Christian August Berkholz (* July 21, 1805 in Riga ; † February 23, 1889 ibid) was a German-Baltic Protestant clergyman and educator.

Christian August Berkholz (also Christian August Bergholz ) was born as the son of Dr. phil. Martin Balthasar Berckholtz (born September 18, 1775 in Riga; † November 25, 1844), pastor at St. Gertrud's Church in Riga and his wife Christiane Elisabeth (born May 21, 1786; † May 30, 1849), b. von Bretschneider, born.

On April 4, 1836, he married Margarethe Meta Girgensohn, daughter of Gustav Carl Girgensohn (1786–1872), senior teacher in Dorpat . In 1861 he adopted Mathilde Berkholz, who later became the wife of Dr. phil. Albert Schnell in Switzerland .

Career

He attended the Gouvernement Gymnasium (Krons Gymnasium) in Riga until 1824. He then studied theology at the University of Dorpat until 1827. From 1828 to 1829 he attended the universities in Berlin , Heidelberg , Königsberg , Halle , Jena and Bonn and heard lectures from Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Friedrich Schleiermacher . From there he traveled to Switzerland, Italy and Vienna .

In 1830 he got a job as a private tutor and worked as such in Nitau and Lettin until 1835 . In 1836 he became a pastor in Oppekaln in Livonia . From 1840 to 1877 he was senior pastor at the St. Jacobi Church in Riga and at the same time from 1840 to 1851 senior teacher for religion, the Greek and Hebrew languages ​​at the Gouvernement grammar school.

From 1840 to 1863 he preached in the Crown Prison in Riga and from 1840 to 1863 he was co-director of the Pleskodahl institution, an educational institution for boys at risk, which Herr von Klein founded on a former estate for stray boys.

In 1844 he was promoted to Dr. phil. appointed by the University of Jena.

From 1847 to 1880 he was assessor of the Livonian consistory .

In 1850 he taught at the German Jacobi Church School.

In 1861 he was appointed consistorial councilor.

In 1864 he was the editor of the Rigaer Kirchenblatt and from 1854 to 1867 publisher of the "Mitteilungen und Nachrichten für die Evangelische Geistung der Russ" (Communications and Messages for the Evangelical Clergy in Russia).

In 1885 the University of Dorpat appointed him Dr. theol. hc

Act

Christian August Berkholz was a leader in overcoming rationalism and the reawakening of a Christianized religious life in Riga. He also advocated the gradual Germanization of Latvians.

In 1844 he was director of the literary and practical citizens' association in Riga.

In 1851 he was at the Parish Vicar Institute for Livonia.

Member of the Great Guild in Riga since 1860 .

In 1884 he became an honorary member of the "Society for History and Archeology".
