Arend Berkholz

Arend Berkholz (also Arend von Berkholz ) (born November 8, 1808 in Riga , † August 11, 1888 in Majorenhof ) was a German-Baltic mayor.

Life

family

Arend Berkholz was born as the son of Dr. phil. Martin Balthasar Berckholtz (born September 18, 1775 in Riga; † November 25, 1844), pastor at St. Gertrud's Church in Riga and his wife Christiane Elisabeth (born May 21, 1786; † May 30, 1849), b. von Bretschneider, born. He married on October 25 in Riga Alexandra (born December 26, 1822, † February 22, 1874), daughter of the Stadtwraker (inspector of goods, mostly "Flachswraker") Alexander Götz, and was a widowed Doss. They had two sons together.

Career

At first, Arend Berkholz received only school lessons from his father and attended the Gouvernement-Gymnasium (Krons-Gymnasium) in Riga from 1823 to 1828 with the then deputy director Karl Ludwig Grave and studied law at the University of Dorpat from 1829 to 1832 . In 1832 he traveled to Moscow via St. Petersburg to enroll as a student, but was rejected by the curator Solochwostow and the minister Sergei Semjonowitsch Uvarow .

On July 6, 1834, he received the dignity of a graduate student of law from the law faculty of the University of Dorpat and entered the service of the Riga City Council as an auscultant , there he became secretary of the commission for the establishment of the Lombardy in 1835 , in the same year he became also teachers at Sunday School . This was followed in 1837 as a secretary of the commission to determine the relationship between the city guard and horses and the commission to regulate the border between the moat and the city territory.

In 1836 he began as a notary for the Krepost expedition (inheritance matters of the Baltic noble family von Lilienfeld 1795–1843) and in 1839 became secretary of the Evangelical Lutheran city ​​consistory and in 1845 an advocate for the city council, before becoming a councilor in 1847.

In 1851 he became parish judge adjunct and controller of the lists for the 10th revision in the patrimonial area . In 1865 he was appointed parish judge and president , which he held until 1880.

In 1878 he was elected mayor of Riga. He remained in this office until 1881 before retiring with a pension.
