Nicolai Georg Kymmel (* June 5 . Jul / 17th June  1816 greg. In Riga , † June 25 jul. / 8. July  1905 greg. ) Was a Baltic booksellers and publishers .

Life

Origin and family

Nicolai was a son of the merchant and brewery owner in Riga and Eleonora, nee. Salchow, from Mitau . His first marriage was in 1844 with Elise Koch († 1851) and again in 1854 with his sister-in-law Auguste Koch († 1881). He left a total of six children from both marriages, including Nikolai Kymmel (* 1845), who continued the business of the father in parts

Career

Kymmel completed a commercial apprenticeship in Riga and worked from 1834 to 1838 for Eduard Frantzen , whose bookstore he bought in 1842. From then on he worked as a publisher. He was a co-founder of the Riga-St.Petersburg Steamship Company and in 1859 of the Ligat share paper mill, of which he was head for a long time. He was also co-founder of the Baltic Monthly and from 1862 to 1868 senior man of the Great Guild , but then resigned. Until 1888 he was the owner of the N. Kymmel company and managed the publishing house until 1894.
