Paul Fallot
Paul Fallot (born June 25, 1889 in Strasbourg , † October 21, 1960 in Paris ) was a French geologist and paleontologist .
Life
Fallot was the son of an industrialist who settled in Lausanne . From 1908 he studied geology with Maurice Lugeon in Lausanne (where Émile Argand was a doctoral student at the time), in Grenoble with Wilfrid Kilian (1862-1925) and in 1910/11 with Émile Haug at the Sorbonne . It was first published in 1910 (on pyritic ammonites from the Balearic Islands ). He began extensive field studies in the Balearic Islands in 1912.
In 1914 he volunteered for military service in World War I and rose from 2nd class soldier to lieutenant, most recently in the General Staff of the 162nd Infantry Division and 3rd Corps. He has received several awards for his bravery.
In 1922 he received his doctorate from Haug at the Sorbonne. In his dissertation he showed that the Betic Cordillera continues via Mallorca to southern Sardinia and Sicily. In 1923 he succeeded René Nicklès (1859-1917) professor of applied geology at the University of Nancy , where he also deals with regional geology and mapping in the French Jura . From 1938 he was a professor at the Collège de France .
He dealt in particular with the geology, stratigraphy and paleontology of the western Mediterranean and Spain , especially the Balearic Islands. Later he also turned to the geology of the Alps, in the 1950s the tectonics of the Eastern Alps. He has made over 300 publications. He also dealt with engineering geology and military geology .
