The Fallotaspididae , sometimes also Fallotaspidae , are one of the five families within the trilobite superfamily of the Fallotaspidoidea . They first appeared in the fossil record in the Lower Cambrian and, with Profallotaspis jakutensis, represent one of the four oldest known trilobite species.

etymology

The Fallotaspididae were named after the taxon Fallotaspis , with which the French paleontologist Paul Fallot (1889-1960) was honored. Aspis is derived from the Greek άσπίς for "shield". The fallotaspidids were scientifically described for the first time by Pierre Hupé in 1953.

Distribution and occurrence

The appearance of Profallotaspis jakutensis defines the beginning of the second stage (third series) of the Cambrian in Siberia, the taxon was found in the Pestrotsvet formation on the southeastern Siberian table .

The Fallotaspididae died out before the onset of the fourth series. The last fallotaspidid was Parafallotaspis grata from the Sekwi Formation in northwestern Canada.

The Fallotaspididae are found in Baltica ( Poland , Sweden ), Laurentia (northwestern Canada , southwestern United States ), Morocco, and Siberia .

The following biostratigraphic trilobite zones were named after Fallotaspididae:

Development history

As one of the most original trilobite families, the Fallotaspididae play a central role in the phylogenetic development of the trilobites. According to Jell (2003), four side branches split off from them, giving rise to the following trilobite groups:

As a result, representatives of all the trilobite orders occurring in the Cambrian developed directly or indirectly from the Fallotaspidids: Agnostina, Corynexochida, Ptychopariida and Redlichiida.
