Wilhelm von Abbema (born January 15, 1812 in Krefeld , † November 8, 1889 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter , engraver and etcher .

Life

Abbema was the son of Abraham von Abbema and his wife Anna Flea.

Abbema first began studying landscape painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1832 under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer , and also trained as a copper engraver in the landscape and architecture subject . From 1832 he made the first etchings based on his own landscape drawings from the area around Düsseldorf; In 1846 he became known nationwide with the large-format, detailed sheet The Cologne Cathedral before the renewal of the building work and another view of the cathedral.
