Otto Salomon ( pseudonym Otto Bruder and Otto Johannes Bernt ) (born July 7, 1889 in Frankfurt am Main , † May 17, 1971 in Zollikerberg ) was a German publisher and writer.

Life

Otto Salomon came from a liberal Jewish merchant family; he converted to Christianity and was baptized in 1911.

After receiving a commercial apprenticeship, he began studying acting in Frankfurt am Main in 1913 and became a dramaturge in Bonn in 1914 .

He did his military service during the First World War and was then a student of German and art history at the University of Munich .

From 1922 onwards he headed the Christian Kaiser Verlag in Munich until he emigrated to Switzerland in 1938 ; he was also the editor of Dietrich Bonhoeffer . During his stay in Munich, he met the philosophy student Helmut Gollwitzer , with whom he became friends.

On September 24, 1939, in Zollikon, he met the theologian Karl Barth , with whom he had already been in contact through Christian Kaiser Verlag, who was the first general secretary of the Ecumenical Council of Churches , the Dutchman Willem Adolf Visser't Hooft ( 1900–1985), started and wrote an expert opinion, whereupon he worked at the Ecumenical Council of Churches in Geneva from 1939 to 1948 until he was editor at Gotthelf Verlag in Bern from 1947 to 1950. In 1950 he became head of the Zwingli publishing house in Zurich and remained in this position until 1958. In 1954 he was able to convince Klaus Schädelin to publish his Gockel stories with the book Mein Name ist Eugen .

He founded the Flamberg-Verlag (the Flamberg is a sword with a wavy blade that appeared at the beginning of the 15th century, i.e. a so-called flaming sword, with which archangels are often depicted), which was later taken over by the Zwingli-Verlag.

Otto Salomon married Elfriede (née Weber) in 1930, a granddaughter of the theologian Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt , who also had a deep religious influence on him.

Escape to Switzerland

The owner of the Christian Kaiser Verlag, Albert Lempp , who hid Otto Salomon in a hidden back room of the publisher, had contacts with an Austrian border official and helped him escape to Switzerland during a "vacation trip" to Landeck in Tyrol . Karl Barth, whose books were published by Christian-Kaiser-Verlag, was informed about these preparations for escape at an early stage.

Social work

Otto Salomon was the Christian Wandervogel youth movement close and worked in Neuwerk district of Günther Dehn as well with as in, connected thereto, neuhutterischen Bruderhof movement of Eberhard Arnold and his wife Emmy. From July 1920 to January 1922 he was one of the first residents of their farm in Sannerz near Schlüchtern ; However, he left the court because everyone who came was accepted, while a more closed spiritual community seemed necessary to him as the core of the settlement.

During Dietrich Bonhoeffer's stay in Switzerland, he was in contact with Karl Barth by letter; Dietrich Bonhoeffer's correspondence with Karl Barth also went through Otto Salomon's address.

Writing

As a writer Otto Salomon wrote poetry, dramas, novels and stories under the pseudonym Otto Bruder ; he published his poetry under the pseudonym Otto Johannes Bernt. Otto Salomon wrote the Christmas carol Star and Angel, Shepherd and the Wise Men , which Paul Ernst Ruppel set to music in 1967. He also wrote a large number of the sun songs .

His writing The Village on the Mountain was in the list of harmful and undesirable literature of the National Socialists.
