Ole Sarvig

Ole Sarvig (born November 27, 1921 in Copenhagen , † December 4, 1981 ibid) was a Danish writer, translator, art historian and critic. Most of all, he was known as a poet.

life and work

Ole Sarvig studied art history and philosophy. He became a publisher's editor and worked as an art critic from 1950 to 1954 . He then lived in Spain until 1962. In 1972 he became a member of the Danish Academy.

Modernism begins with Sarvig in Danish poetry. In his abstract poems the objects are only symbols of the psychic beings. His favorite metaphor is the house for the self. One of his poetry collections is entitled Jeghuset ( Das Ich-Haus , 1944). According to Sarvig, the human career is isolated and misappropriated until he realizes the need to return to the self, "to the strange house that once stood and looked out onto the beach in the early morning". The fear of lack of relationship is the leitmotif of numerous poems. A poem from his lyrical debut collection Grønne digte ( Green Poems , 1943) was included as a cultural heritage in the Danish cultural canon in 2006. Per Nørgård set some of his poems to music.

The setting of his first novel Die Steinwüsten ( Stenrosen ) is the stone desert- like post-war Berlin. His later novels often appear Kafkaesque and are not always easy to understand, although Hansen uses detective novel techniques in them. Most of the time the main character is looking for her own self. For example, in the novel Die Schlafenden ( De sovende , 1958), the narrator who has returned home from the war has suppressed the memory of his terrible deeds and can only find redemption by visiting his victim. Sarvig also earned "special recognition as a translator of Shakespeare's works".
