Life
Wolf studied medicine in Greifswald and Würzburg . He completed his studies in 1874 with a state examination and doctorate. He initially worked as a ship's doctor at North German Lloyd until 1878 and traveled repeatedly to the United States . In 1879 he joined the Saxon Army as a military doctor and was promoted to medical officer. He completed training in ophthalmology in Leipzig and North America . From 1883 to 1886 he took part in the Kassai expedition in the Congo , led by Hermann von Wissmann . After Wissmann fell ill, Wolf took over the leadership of the expedition in September 1885. From 1886 to 1888 he worked as a medical officer in Leipzig. After his return, Wolf was assigned to the German Foreign Office in 1887 , which commissioned him to research the hinterland of the German colony of Togo . On December 1, 1887, Wolf was appointed Reich Commissioner for Togo. There he founded the Bismarckburg station in 1888 , which he tried to develop through plantings. However, the station was off the traditional trade routes, so that it was relocated after a few years. When Wolf von Bismarckburg wanted to advance to central Niger , he died on the way of a fever caused by malaria , according to other sources of poisoning.
