John Bright (born November 16, 1811 in Rochdale , Lancashire , † March 27, 1889 ibid) was a British politician and the most important ally of Richard Cobden and a leading member of the Anti-Corn Law League . He was a representative of the radicals .

John Brights, like his father Jacob Bright, was a Quaker . This ran a cotton factory. When he was 15, John Bright started working for his father.

In 1836 or 1837 Bright met Richard Cobden for the first time , in 1838 he first publicly agitated against the Corn Laws , and in 1839 he sat on the committee that founded the Anti-Corn Law League . Bright was an important rhetorician and coined the phrase Flogging a Dead Horse , among other things . He drove the major British parliamentary reform of 1867 . He campaigned for the lifting of import tariffs on grain, fought against the first Irish Home Rule and was an important opponent of various foreign policy initiatives of the British Empire.
