Boris Nikolayevich Yuryev ( Russian Борис Николаевич Юрьев ; born October 29 . Jul / 10. November  1889 greg. In Smolensk ; † 14. March 1957 in Moscow ) was a Soviet helicopter designer.

Life

Jurjew developed the theoretical basis of a helicopter as early as 1910 and solved the main problems of control and stability. In 1912 he designed the first helicopter, but it was unsuccessful. In Russia he is considered to be the inventor of the swash plate .

After the First World War he deepened his studies in aviation, graduated from the Technical University in Moscow in 1919 and worked there until 1929, initially as a research assistant and from 1925 as a professor. As head of the aerodynamic testing department at ZAGI , he succeeded in getting talented scientists interested in helicopter construction, such as Iwan Bratuchin , with whom he designed the Omega helicopter, which was equipped with two main rotors on booms in 1941 . In collaboration with Alexei Cheryomuchin , the development and construction of the ZAGI 1-EA , the first successful Soviet helicopter, was successful.

Jurjew worked at several teaching institutes: from 1920 to 1949 at the Zhukovsky Academy , whose deputy head he was from 1942 to 1949, at the State Aviation Institute (1930-1940) and from 1944 at the Academy of Sciences , of which he became a member in 1943 and where until 1950 he was head of the commission for the history of technology and from 1950 head of the aerodynamics laboratory in its institute for mechanics.

For his path through life, Yuryev received the Order of Lenin twice, twice, in 1943 and 1946, the State Prize, and in 1940 he was named Merited Scientist and Technician of the USSR . Jurjew published numerous works on aerodynamics and several books. After his death, the Academy of Sciences published his collected works in two volumes in 1961 . He was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery.
