Artur Adson

Artur Adson (born February 3, 1889 in Tartu , † January 5, 1977 in Stockholm ) was an Estonian poet , writer and theater critic.

Early years

Artur Adson (actually Karl Arthur Adson ) attended school in Tartu, Sänna and Võru . After graduating from high school, he first learned geodesy in Pskow . In 1925/26 he studied literature at the University of Tartu . Artur Adson worked as a surveyor , journalist and theater critic in Estonia and Russia . He met Marie Under in 1913 . She had a powerful effect on him both personally and literarily. Both married in 1927.

From 1917 Artud Adson belonged to the artist group Siuru . The sometimes very erotic, life-affirming poems had a great influence on Estonian literature . Later Adson was also active in the Tarapita group. In addition, Adson was one of the most outstanding poets in the South Estonian dialect. His poetry in Võro is still one of the most successful poems to this day. As an often conservative theater and literary critic, he exerted influence on the cultural scene in the Republic of Estonia.

exile

With the Soviet occupation of Estonia, Artur Adson and Marie Under had to flee into exile in Sweden . There he found work in an archive. However, both remained loyal to Estonian literature.
