Gustav Schumm (* July 31, 1889 ; † May 1, 1966 ) was a German senior teacher and president, rugby and soccer player at VfB Stuttgart . He has had a decisive influence on the system of today's youth work in football.

Athletic career

At the age of 14 he was active as a rugby and soccer player in the Stuttgart FV 93, a predecessor of VfB Stuttgart . Even as a player, Schumm campaigned for FV 93 to focus more on football than on rugby. In football, Schumm contributed significantly to the qualification of the newly merged VfB Stuttgart for the then first-class Südkreisliga at the promotion games in 1912.

Achievements as a functionary

In 1918 Schumm became president of VfB Stuttgart for one year. There he reorganized youth work, which until then only differentiated between young people (between today's A and C young people) and pupils (D and E young people). He determined a new division of the youth teams into A, B, and C youth. In addition, it provided for educational measures. He later also implemented this concept at the DFB .

As a football official, he held important functions in the association. On his seventieth birthday, he was honored by both the DFB and VfB for his services. He died in 1966 and was buried in the Prague cemetery in Stuttgart in the presence of those responsible for the WFV and VfB President Fritz Walter .

Others

After the First World War , Schumm received his doctorate and became a physics teacher at high schools in Stuttgart.
