Fritz Walter

Fritz Walter (born March 15, 1900 in Cannstatt near Stuttgart ; † January 5, 1981 ), epithet : The doctor , was a teacher and from 1944 to 1968 president of the sports club VfB Stuttgart .

He not only led VfB Stuttgart through its most successful era, but was also a pioneer of German football after the end of the Second World War in offices in many association bodies (for example as long-time chairman of the DFB's contract players' committee) .

After graduating from high school and serving for six months in World War I , he joined VfB Stuttgart as a member in 1919. At that time he was already studying German, Romance and English. As a young Dr. phil. He became secretary of VfB Stuttgart early on in 1923.

Presidency at VfB Stuttgart

He succeeded in obtaining the approval of the American General Jackson to establish a southern German league . Thanks to Fritz Walter, the game began in autumn 1945 in a zone-wide league, while in the rest of Germany it was not even thought of. Fritz Walter played a decisive role in the rise of VfB Stuttgart to a top club in southern Germany and Germany. He avoided plunging the club into financially incalculable risks. But since other clubs wanted more and more success at any price, he was pushed more and more from within their own ranks to adopt a more "offensive" purchasing policy. And so it was finally Senator Hans Weitpert who advocated this new purchasing policy and thus first became an advisor to the Board of Management, only to replace Walter as President in 1969. When Weitpert's new purchasing policy finally brought the club into great financial hardship, which ultimately led VfB to inevitable relegation, Walter felt at 75 years no longer able to join the emergency board when he was needed again. Despite his disappointment with the development that VfB took after his departure, his connection to VfB Stuttgart always remained.

During Fritz Walter's presidency, VfB became German football champions twice (1950 and 1952) and won the DFB Cup twice (1954 and 1958). Ironically, Stuttgart alternated at the championships for four years with 1. FC Kaiserslautern , which was led by football player Fritz Walter . A street and a house in Bad Cannstatt, where young football players find accommodation and care, still bears his name today.

On January 28, 1970, Fritz Walter was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class by the Federal President and presented by the Mayor Arnulf Klett and the District President Friedrich Roemer .
