Gaston d'Orléans married Infanta Isabella of Brazil (1846-1921), the heir to the Emperor Pedro II of Brazil , on October 15, 1864 . Four children emerged from the mutual connection:

  • Stillborn daughter (* \ † July 28, 1874)
  • Pedro de Alcántara d'Orléans (1875–1940)
  • Luís d'Orléans (1878–1920)
  • António Gastão d'Orléans (1881-1918)

Soon after the marriage of the two, the Triple Alliance War broke out, which Brazil, together with Argentina and Uruguay, waged against the dictator of Paraguay, Francisco Solano López . As the emperor's son-in-law , Gaston d'Orléans strove for military command, but was initially passed over. Only in the final phase of the war, on February 20, 1869, was he appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Brazilian Army , and on March 22, 1869, he took over the command of the Allied forces. He proved to be a capable commander and brought the war to a victorious end by February 1870.

In 1889 he and his family fled to France after the fall of the emperor. The family lived here at Château d'Eu in Normandy . Shortly after the end of the First World War , he lost his youngest son, who was fatally injured in a plane crash. His second-born died in 1920 as a result of the wounds he had suffered during the war. Like his brother, he served as an officer in the British armed forces, Luíz in the British Army , while Antônio served as an air force pilot in the Royal Air Force . The following year, his wife died after 57 years of marriage. In 1922, the Comte d'Eu boarded the Massalia to take part in the celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of Brazil's independence. The 80-year-old died on the way of the ship to Brazil.
