Hannes Pétursson (born December 14, 1931 in Sauðárkrókur ) is an Icelandic writer.

Life

He was born the son of a bank director in Sauðárkrókur on Skagafjörður in northern Iceland. He graduated from high school in Reykjavík in 1952 . From 1952 to 1954 he studied German in Cologne and Heidelberg . From 1954 to 1959 he then studied Icelandic Studies at the University of Iceland .

He started working for the publishing house of the Kulturfonds in Reykjavík. Hannes worked as a literary scholar, editor and translator. He translated texts by Rainer Maria Rilke and Franz Kafka . He wrote travelogues and published volumes of poems and stories he wrote.

Honors

In 1975 he received the Henrik Steffens Prize . In 1993 he was awarded the Icelandic Literature Prize.
