Ragnar Kjartansson (born August 17, 1923 in Snæfellsnes , † October 26, 1988 in Reykjavík ) was an Icelandic sculptor and ceramist . He is considered one of the most famous and important artists in the country.

life and work

Ragnar Kjartansson, son of the pastor Kjartan Kjartansson, learned ceramics from Guðmundur Einarsson frá Miðdal (1895–1963) and at the Swedish ceramics manufacturer Upsala-Ekeby AB and studied art at the Handíða- og myndlistaskóli (school for arts and crafts) and at Ásmundur Sveinsson at Myndlistaskólinn í Reykjavík (Art School in Reykjavík) . He taught art and was temporarily director of the Reykjavík School of Art.

In 1945 he married the bank clerk Katrín Guðmundsdóttir. The couple have four children. His daughter Inga Ragnarsdóttir (* 1955), who lives in Kempten (Allgäu), is also a sculptor and painter. His eldest son is the actor, director and playwright Kjartan Ragnarsson (* 1945), who married the well-known Icelandic actress Guðrún Ásmundsdóttir (* 1935). Her son, in turn, is the musician, performance artist and sculptor Ragnar Kjartansson (* 1976), who was named after his grandfather.

As a pioneer of Icelandic ceramics, he founded Funi Keramik in 1947 and Glit Keramik in 1958 , which still use the lava decor he developed. He was also known to Dieter Roth , who produced decorative painting for Ragnar's ceramic workshop.

Ragnar Kjartansson was instrumental in founding the Icelandic sculptors' association Myndhöggvarafélagið (MHR) in 1972, on whose board he was active for years.

Ragnar Kjartansson has participated in a variety of solo and group exhibitions. His work is represented in numerous museums and there are reliefs and statues of him all over Iceland, many of them in public ownership. These include, for example, the horse statues “Stóð” (“horse herd”) in Reykjavík and “Faxi” (“fair mane”) in Sauðárkrókur , the mythological sculptures “ Bárður Snæfellsás ” in Arnarstapi and “ Auðumbla ” in Akureyri , as well as several memorials drowned sailors, for example "Björgun" ("rescue") in Siglufjörður , "Jöklarar" ("glacier people") in Hellissandur and another one called "Bæn" ("prayer") on the main road from Eskifjörður . In 2003 there was a large memorial exhibition on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
