Krapina ( Eng . Historically: Grabing ) is a city in northern Croatia and forms the administrative seat of the Krapina-Zagorje County .

location

Krapina is located in the hilly historical region of Hrvatsko Zagorje , about 55 km from both Zagreb and Varaždin . 4,471 and a total of 12,480 residents (as of 2011) live in the city.

history

The city was first mentioned in 1193.

In 1899, the geologist and paleontologist Dragutin Gorjanović-Kramberger began to excavate a total of almost 900 severely splintered bones from at least 23 early Neanderthals from around 130,000 years ago in an abbey on the Hušnjak hill near the town ( Krapina (archaeological site) ). Several hundred stone tools and fossil animal bones were also found. It is believed that this was a burial place. The thesis that ritual cannibalism was practiced has now been disproved. In 2010 the Neanderthal Museum was opened in Krapina .

Culture

Every September, the town hosts the Festival of Kaykavian Culture and Songs ( Tjedan kajkavske kulture i popevke ), where performances are sung in the local Kaykavian dialect and traditional customs of Croatian Zagorje are demonstrated.

The traditional thermal bath Krapinske Toplice is located near the city .
