history

In 1227 the Hungarian Count Palatine Moys de Daro had a monastery built on his property in the south of the Hungarian kingdom in the village of Pél. The village was later called Pél Monostor (after the monastery). Pél Monostor belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1920, with the exception of the Turkish occupation in the 16th and 17th centuries.

In 1920 the place and the southern Baranja fell to Yugoslavia. In 1923 the place was renamed. Pél Monostor was translated into Serbo-Croatian and was now called Beli Manastir.

After the Second World War , the city and the southern Baranja were incorporated into the Yugoslav republic of Croatia. After Croatia's independence in 1991 and the war that followed, the city fell into the hands of the insurgent Serbs. The non-Serbian population was expelled. In 1997 the city and southern Baranja were returned to Croatia by peace agreement. The non-Serbian population was able to return.

Today the city is the district town and center of the Croatian Baranja.
