Fiľakovo (German Fileck , Hungarian Fülek ) is a town in southern Slovakia , about 15 km southeast of Lučenec just before the Hungarian border , about 30 km north of Salgótarján ( Hungary ).

The castle was mentioned for the first time in 1242, the city itself as Filek in 1246 . Fiľakovo is located in a former volcanically active part of the northern Hungarian low mountain range . On the basalt stump of an extinct volcano , the ruins of Fiľakovo Castle are located in the center of the city . It is the largest castle in the former Hungarian Nógrád county .
