description

Habitus
Stems with leaves. These have no stipules.
The leaves are dense gray-tomentose underneath.

The gray sun rose is very changeable in terms of the size of all parts, the growth and the hair ( indument ). In Lower Franconia, there are forms whose leaves are small, thick and flat-edged, and the lower ones, therefore, represent strong approximations of the northern European species Helianthemum oelandicum .

Appearance and leaf

The gray sun rose grows as a subshrub and reaches heights of 10 to 20 centimeters. The flower-bearing branches are mostly upright or ascending and loosely or more densely tomentose. The leaves are linear to eilanzettlich shaped, up to 3 cm long, about 6 mm wide and narrowed into a short, about 1 cm long stalk. They are hairy gray or white tomentose on both sides or at least underneath, also tufted at the edge. Stipules are usually not present.

Generative characteristics

The flowering time is in May and June. The hermaphrodite flowers are radially symmetrical and five-fold. The inner sepals are broadly ovate, blunt or pointed, the outer more linear. The petals are yellow, rarely yellowish white, about 3 to 8 mm long and up to twice as long as the inner sepals. The stylus is curved in an S-shape at the base and thickened towards the tip. The fruit stalks are upright or horizontal.

The light brown capsule fruit is triangular, ovoid-spherical and contains several seeds. The red-brown seeds are round to polygonal and mostly smooth.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Occurrence

Helianthemum canum occurs in Central, Western and Southern Europe ; advancing east to southern Russia , Asia Minor and Armenia . The largest population in Western Europe is found in the limestone area of the Burren in western Ireland. It is a sub-Mediterranean floral element . In Austria it occurs scattered in the Pannonian area , otherwise it is rare, in Switzerland it is found generally scattered. The gray sun rose is rare in Germany; it occurs in Thuringia , Lower Franconia , Baden-Württemberg and in the Saale-Unstrut area in southern Saxony-Anhalt .

The gray sun rose grows on dry grassland and in dry pine forests. It thrives best on warm, lime-rich, and stony soils . In Central Europe it is a character type of the Xerobromion association , but also occurs in societies of the Erico-Pinion association.

Species protection

Endangerment in Germany: Category 3 = endangered. The gray sun rose is "specially protected" according to the Federal Species Protection Ordinance (BArtSchV).
