Ružiná (Hungarian Rózsaszállás - until 1907 Rózsalehota ) is a municipality in southern Slovakia with 861 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It belongs to the Okres Lučenec , a district of the Banskobystrický kraj , and is also part of the traditional Novohrad landscape .

The municipality is located in the northwestern part of the Lučenská kotlina basin (part of the southern Slovak basin ) at the confluence of the Teplica and Drieňovec rivers . The Ružiná reservoir , which is important for regional holiday traffic , extends north of the village , while the Sedem chotárov mountain ( 602  m nm ) rises to the south . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 268  m nm and is 19 kilometers from Lučenec .

Neighboring communities are Divín in the north, Lovinobaňa in the east, Stará Halič in the south and Tuhár in the west.

history

The place arose in the 14th century during the colonization of the dominion of the Divín Castle , but was only mentioned in writing as Rosalehotha in 1499 . The name is said to be derived from wild roses that can still be found here today . In 1828 there were 55 houses and 420 inhabitants who were employed in agriculture, as shepherds and in the local lime kiln. Magnesite mining began at the end of the 19th century and continued into the 1950s.

Until 1918/1919 the place in Neograd County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, 870 people lived in Ružiná, of whom 795 were Slovaks, nine were Roma and one each was Magyar, Moravian and Czech. 68 residents did not answer. 720 residents confessed to the Roman Catholic Church, 21 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, two residents to the Evangelical Methodist Church and one resident each to the Seventh-day Adventists, the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Greek Catholic Church; one resident professed a different denomination. 55 inhabitants were without religious denomination and the denomination of 67 inhabitants was not determined.
