Gönyű is a municipality on the banks of the Danube in the small area Győr , which is in Győr-Moson-Sopron County in Hungary .
history
In Roman times, the Limes road following the Danube ran through the town. It was still in use in the Middle Ages and could be seen in an aerial photo taken in 1952. Today the old route is built over; the modern street layout does not follow its course. It is also assumed that there was a Roman watchtower on Irányi Dániel utca, around 45 meters east of the Limes Road. Its task was not only to signal messages, but also to monitor the Danube, which then as now acted as a border river.
