The Funkturm motorway triangle is located on the western Berlin city ring (A 100) in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf , which connects the A 115 ( AVUS ) to the south to the Nuthetal motorway triangle . The triangle is named after the nearby radio tower , which is located on the exhibition grounds and can be seen from afar from various directions.

The main route swings to the south-east and connects the A 100 coming from the west with the A 115 running south. Directly to the west of the A 100 is the strikingly shaped, metal-clad building of the International Congress Center (ICC).

Another striking building at the radio tower triangle is the former administration building of AVUS GmbH, begun in 1935, with the round aiming tower at its southern end, which is exactly on the AVUS feeder curve. It houses the motel and restaurant Avus (exit Rasthof AVUS) with a good view to the south and west due to the round shape. One of the advertising features of the building is a permanently installed Mercedes star on the roof.

Planned renovation

Due to the poor structural condition of the roadways and the bridge structures as well as the unfavorable and congestion-prone traffic routing, the motorway triangle should be completely rebuilt from 2015. In the course of the renovation, the motorway triangle and the junction are to be spatially separated. The project has been registered for the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 . 50.5 million euros were estimated for the renovation.

However, a study commissioned by the Senate came to the conclusion in 2015 that a “new building in the existing structure” with “free alignment” would make sense. The study also examined the construction of an elevated road over the Avus north curve. A planning period of seven years and total costs of around 264 million euros were determined for the preferred variant for the reconstruction of the motorway triangle.

In the meantime, experts have found construction errors in the mesh of prestressed concrete bridges from the 1960s. The aim of the conversion is therefore initially to maintain road safety. A completely new building was not yet in sight at the beginning of 2018.
