The Operation Kaman 99 included a series of retaliatory attacks by the Iranian Air Force against Iraq on September 23, 1980. The Iraqi air strikes the previous day against several Iranian cities, to which the retaliation was referring, marked the beginning of the first Gulf War .

prehistory

On September 22, 1980, Iraq launched massive air strikes against strategically important locations in Iran. At 1:45 a.m. local time, 6 Iraqi MiG-23s bombed Iranian air bases near Ahvaz . Half an hour later, more Iraqi planes attacked Mehrabad Airport in Tehran . At the same time, the Iraqis attacked eight other large air bases in Iran. Some of the Iranian warplanes were stationed in hardened hangars, and many of the bomb hits were also imprecise, so that the attacks could not significantly weaken the Iranian air force. After the attacks, Iran prepared a counterattack that started the next day.

The attack

The operation began on September 23. 40 F-4 Phantoms took off towards Baghdad and attacked al-Rashid, al-Habbaniyah and al-Kut airfields . Meanwhile, eight more F-4s took off from Tehran and launched a second attack on the air force base in al-Rashid. Several Northrop F-5s took off from Tabriz and bombed the Mosul airfield . After the attack, they bombed Nasiriyah Airport, which was badly damaged.

Meanwhile, the Iranians let up 60 F- 14s to defend their own airspace against possible Iraqi counter-attacks. These reached two Iraqi MiG-21s that were shot down. Three Iraqi MiG-23s shot down an Iranian F-5E and an Iraqi Su-20 was shot down during operation. Iraqi MiG-23s destroyed two F-5E's and an Iraqi plane shot down its own.
