development

The Su-20 is an export version of the Su-17M , which was developed after a decision by the Soviet government to modernize the equipment of the Su-17 in February 1972. The first flight of the prototype known as the S-32MKI took place in December of the same year. Trials were completed after a year and the model was released for export in December 1973. Users were the Middle East countries Egypt, Iraq and Syria. Poland was the only one of the Warsaw contracting states to receive the Su-20 and kept it until 1997. There was also a reconnaissance version, the Su-20R . From the outside, the Su-20 and the improved Su-22 model differ from the Su-17 mainly in the flatter ridge between the cockpit and tail fin. All of the above and their predecessor Sukhoi Su-7 have the same NATO code name: Fitter.
