The Sukhoi S-37 ( Russian Сухой С-37 ) was a project for a single-engine multi-role fighter aircraft based on the Su-27 . The collapse of the Soviet Union prevented the realization.

The name Suchoi S-37 was later used for the Su-47 Berkut .

description

Development of the S-37 probably began in the late 1980s after the single-engine variant of the MiG-29 had failed ( Project R-33 ). Since large parts of the Soviet air force were still equipped with MiG-21 and MiG-23 , there was a need for replacement. The newest fighter aircraft available at the time were the MiG-29 and Su-27. Since both models were too expensive to produce in the required quantities, Sukhoi suggested a single-engine variant of the Su-27. The S-37 was to use the AL-41F engine, which was still in the early conception phase, and which was later used on the MiG 1.44 . Compared to the Su-27, the S-37 had significantly shortened dimensions, with large parts of the wings being redesigned. At the same time, canards and a simple vertical stabilizer were used. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the S-37 was abandoned. Considerations to finish the machine for the export market failed because of the financing.
