The Sukhoi P-1 ( Russian Сухой П-1 ) was a prototype for a Soviet interceptor .

history

In 1955 the OKB Sukhoi was asked to submit drafts for a two-seat interceptor with one Ljulka AL-9 engine and two Klimow WK-11 engines. The drafts were given the designation P1 and P2. In 1956, the development of the two-seat experimental delta wing interceptor P-1 began. It had oval air inlets with adjustable conical air inlet cones on both sides of the fuselage. Up to the front wing root, the fuselage was designed the same as the Su-9 . Before this point, the hull was a redesign; the transition from the two cockpit hoods to the back of the fuselage was smooth. The main landing gear was no longer completely housed in the wings, but the main landing gear wheels were pulled into the fuselage, comparable to the main landing gear of the MiG-21 . The nose landing gear retracted to the rear and not to the front as with the Su-9.

The planned P-2 was identical to the P-1 except for the two engines. The engine inlets would have been a bit larger, but their shape would have been identical to those of the P-1, whereby the shape of the fuselage and the stern would have been very similar to the Su-15 due to the two engines . The first flight took place on July 12, 1957. Since the planned Ljulka AL-9 with 100 kN thrust was not available, the P-1 received a Ljulka AL-7 F, but was severely underpowered. The problems with the planned Ljulka AL-9 engine ultimately led to the flight test being discontinued.

Armament

Originally, either four ARO-70-FFAR drum starters each with eight unguided 70-mm ARS-70FFAR rockets or four unguided, rotation-stabilized TRS-85 rockets each were provided for arming against heavy bombers and reconnaissance aircraft in the wing. These devices would have taken the place of the forward wing fuel tank and the main landing gear bay on the Su-9 wings. However, this armament would have had too great a negative impact on the aerodynamic properties of the slat . It was therefore discarded and the space in the wing was used for fuel. Instead, a section with four flaps was created behind the radar, around the radar electronics located in a pressure cylinder, in front of the cockpit, from which eight unguided ARS-57FFAR rockets could be fired from each opening. The flaps opened inwards and vent flaps opened further back which led the exhaust gases and heat from the rocket motors out of the aircraft. To combat agile targets, the P-1 was each equipped with a wing station to which a K-7 air-to-air missile with a semi-active radar seeker or infrared seeker could be mounted. The only P-1 built was equipped with this armament. In a production version, as with the Su-9 / Su-11, an additional position for the K-7 guided weapon and two positions under the fuselage for additional tanks or cannon containers would have been added per wing.
