The Sukhoi T-49 was a Soviet prototype for an interceptor .
development
The Sukhoi T-49 is a modernized version of the Sukhoi Su-11 with a new radar and modified armament. The project was officially started on August 6, 1957, the first flight of the T-49 prototype took place, after various taxiing tests from October 1959, in January 1960 with A. Konzow on board.
During the development of the T-49, the delta wings , the tail unit and the cigar-shaped fuselage were taken over from the Su-11 . A key distinguishing feature from the previous model is the extended nose of the aircraft to accommodate the more powerful radar. Since this was also associated with a larger diameter, it was no longer possible to accommodate the radar antenna in the shock cone of the air inlet, or there was no longer any space for the ring-shaped air inlet. Therefore, lateral air inlets were constructed on both sides shortly after the radome. This also simplified the functionality of the radar, as its antenna was now permanently installed in the tip of the aircraft and the forward and backward movements of the engine shock cone no longer had to be compensated.
The unfinished T-39 was used to build the T-49. The T-39 project was stopped in 1958. The number 3 fuel tank was reinstalled in the fuselage after a water injection tank was planned for the T-39 project. The entire fuselage in front of the cockpit was redesigned.
The flight tests with the T-49 were promising, but it turned out that the twin-engine project T-58 had greater potential. The single-jet T-49 did not meet these requirements as well as the T-58, especially with regard to the PWO's wishes regarding the reliability of the engines. However, the T-49 proved to be a valuable trailblazer for the T-58, especially with regard to the radar and the development of the air inlets. In terms of air inlets, this gave the T-58 a head start over the competitor model Jak-28 -64 from Jakowlew . The T-58 eventually developed into a production version under the designation Su-15 .
The only built Sukhoi T-49 was damaged in April 1960, repairs were not considered and the aircraft was scrapped.
