The Sukhoi T-3 ( Russian Сухой Т-3 ) was a prototype of a Soviet interceptor .

development

The project of this delta wing interceptor began in 1953. The T-3 was developed in a very short time parallel to the swept wing prototype S-1, with large parts of this pattern being adopted. The T-3 took off on its maiden flight on May 26, 1956. It had a round, non-controllable supersonic air intake with two radar devices located on the top in the bow. The planned pure rocket armament should form guided missiles K-6 or K-7, which were still in development. The tests showed very quickly that the arrangement of the radar devices generated too much resistance, and the development of the planned missiles was delayed, while the existing K-5M missiles were considered inadequate. In addition, there were problems with the engine, so that the project was finally ended. The prototype received a revised radar and a different armament and was further tested as the T-43-1 .
