The Sukhoi Su-38 ( Russian Сухой Су-38 ) is a Russian agricultural aircraft .

development

The first work was carried out in 1993 and saw first one on the Su-29 based aircraft with a radial engine M-14 and the new structure before, but the developers decided after some necessary research in the Argentinean and US market for a new design. A little later, the work had to be stopped due to a lack of financial resources. When Sukhoi started his civil aircraft division GSS (Graschdanskije Samoljoti Sukhovo) in 2000, the first thing to do was to resume the project under the name Su-38L. This time a Czech M-337 engine was provided as the drive, which could also be operated with aviation fuel from 76 octane. The spray device came from the US company Transland . The prototype was completed just a year later and made its maiden flight with Yevgeny Frolov on July 27; afterwards the Su-38L was presented to the public at the MAKS 2001. Subsequently, KAPO (Kazanskoje aviazionnoje proisvodstvennoje obedinenije) in Kazan started manufacturing five aircraft. However, after neither orders to replace the An-2 were received from Germany nor after discussions with Argentine and Brazilian representatives, production was discontinued in 2006. The project was apparently not finally abandoned, because in 2017 the Su-38L was presented again at the MAKS and considerations were made about installing an M-14P .

construction

The Su-38L is a cantilevered, slightly forward - swept low- wing aircraft , the fuselage structure of which is made of welded stainless steel tubes with a cladding made of composite materials . The wings are also covered in this way. The cockpit is hermetically sealed to protect against the ingress of fertilizers and is also equipped with a pilot's seat that is insulated from the airframe to prevent the pilot from receiving an electric shock in the event of a collision with an overhead line . The spray container is located between the engine and the crew cabin in the center of gravity of the aircraft and can hold 1050 l of liquid or 600 kg of powdery substances, which are sufficient to process an area of 80–90 ha in 45–60 minutes. The chassis is not retractable and consists of the main wheels, which are not connected by an axle, and a rear wheel.
