The Sukhoi Su-5 ( Russian Сухой Су-5 , also I-107 ) was designed by the Soviet aircraft designer Pavel Sukhoi and served as an experimental aircraft . Only two copies were built.

development

With the Su-5, a turbo compressor developed by the Central Institute for Aviation Engines (ZIAM) with a downstream combustion chamber was to be tested, which had been installed in the exhaust gas flow of a conventional piston engine and which was intended to increase flight performance considerably. Sukhoi and Mikoyan-Gurevich were commissioned to build such a test vehicle. This was followed by the I-250 (N) and the Su-5 . The latter received a WK-107A -Triebwerk of Alexander Mikulin with four-bladed propeller and the as Cholschtschewnikow accelerator WRDK designated module. The aim was to ensure that the German jet aircraft had comparable flight performance in order to survive in an aerial combat.

The flight tests began in April 1945 with G. Komarow. The auxiliary drive briefly increased the engine output of the WK-107 from 1250 to 2060 kW (1700 to 2800 hp), in which the unit provided an additional 3 kN of thrust. The aircraft reached a speed of 807 km / h at an altitude of 10,000 meters. Since it was already becoming apparent at that time that much higher speeds would be achievable in the future with the ever-improving pure jet engines , the tests with this model were discontinued on July 15, 1945.
